Trump-Xi Summit Tests the Durability of the Trade Truce
The proposed tariff package could lower selected costs without resolving wider technology and security disputes. Watch product coverage, the length of any truce extension and enforceable mineral-supply commitments. Do not treat summit announcements or purchase pledges as implemented relief or booked demand.
U.S.-China AI Talks Broaden Without a Common Security Framework

State laws and litigation remain the immediate U.S. compliance drivers while Congress debates a federal approach. Review age assurance, crisis response and audit requirements by jurisdiction. Do not assume federal preemption will eliminate current state obligations.
EU Enforcement Continues as Child-Safety Proposals Expand
AI Act and Digital Markets Act enforcement proceeds alongside the September 17 KIDS Act proposal, whose chatbot safeguards would extend exposure into product design, but require legislative approval. Separate current compliance duties from proposed requirements when budgeting and setting release plans
What We’re Watching
Trump-Xi Summit and Tariff Package
September 24 preparations include reciprocal relief on $30 billion of goods from each side; initial U.S. coverage could favor List 4A consumer goods. Coverage is not final. Watch the November 10 truce expiry, competing extension proposals and the delayed excess-capacity report after the summit.
US-Mexico Trade Discussions
Watch whether Section 232 tariff relief is tied to stricter auto and AI-hardware rules of origin or broader commitments limiting Chinese technology across telecom, energy, ports and public-safety systems.
EU KIDS Act
The September 17 proposal includes age-based access and chatbot safeguards. Watch Parliament and Council amendments, enforcement design and phase-in dates. The proposed requirements are not yet law.
Canada-EU Relationship
The associate-member concept remains undefined. Watch member-state support and concrete technology, energy and defense arrangements, alongside Washington’s conditional tariff threat.
EU-India Free Trade Agreement (Council Review Pending)
The Commission proposed September 11 that the Council approve the EU-India Free Trade Agreement, which would eliminate tariffs on about 96 percent of EU exports to India. Next steps are Council approval, signing, and Parliament consent.
Google's Digital Markets Act Compliance Deadline (Around September 21)
The Commission has not yet ruled on whether Google’s September 8 search-result changes satisfy its 890-million-euro antitrust decision.
Korea Investment Agreement
The expected September 18 announcement has been delayed. Watch revised terms and signing, followed by confirmation of the previously planned September 29-30 transfer.
FCC Component Rule
Effective October 13, new equipment-authorization restrictions apply to specified Covered List suppliers’ logic-bearing components. Existing authorizations are unaffected by this provision. Check component provenance rather than assuming a blanket Chinese-technology ban.
Court of International Trade
September 30 oral argument on forced-labor tariffs remains the next scheduled test; reply briefs were due September 18. Watch the court’s treatment of the findings and any limits on relief.
NDAA Conference (Defense Authorization Bill)
The Senate has taken no floor action since the failed July cloture vote; Congress returns for one work week before the midterm recess, with a judicial nomination, not the defense bill, first on the calendar.
Russia and Iran Sanctions Bill
House passage on September 16 sent the measure to the president. Watch signature, implementation and waivers affecting buyers of Russian energy; passage alone does not impose a new tariff.
